VR heats up at YouTube

n June 22, the New York Times reported that, with the exception of the gaming industry, VR has proven a disappointment. It cites weak sales for VR headsets and the fact that all the “dabbling” in VR ventures has not amounted to serious strides.
But that may change with a boost from YouTube. The Google-owned video site is promoting the development of VR videos with new resources and tools that help developers and may make VR videos more attractive for marketing.
Which VR elements in a video get the most attention? That's something that creators are able to track with Heatmaps, a feature that YouTube rolled “for 360-degree and VR videos with over 1,000 views” on June 16.

When seconds can mean the difference between life and death

Though we tend to equate being predictable with being boring, in the case of optimizing emergency response, it is actually a virtue.
n emergency situations, response time can make the difference between life and death. 

Since it deployed the Mobile Area Routing and Vehicle Location Information System (MARVLIS) in 2008, Jersey City Medical Center EMS says it has better-than-average response times and markedly improved survival rates. MARVLIS combines geographic information system technology, wireless communications, and a global positioning system to produce real-time information that enables emergency response teams to get to their destinations faster.

One thing about big data: it is not static. As there is always changes in a situation, what reflected reality one day can be out of date the next. That is especially true when a hurricane of the likes of Sandy sweeps through and alters the landscape and the structures built on it.
